SpiceJet first Indian LCC to join IATA

Jaipur, March 19, 2019: SpiceJet, the country’s favourite carrier, has become the first Indian LCC to join the International Air Transport Association (IATA), as a member. IATA is the global trade association for the airline industry, representing over 290 airlines.

This was confirmed by the IATA Director General & CEO, Mr. Alexandre de Juniac, in a letter welcoming SpiceJet warmly, as IATA’s newest member.

Ajay Singh – Chairman and Managing Director, SpiceJet said, “This is a proud moment for all of us at SpiceJet as we join as an IATA member. The membership will further enable us to inculcate global best practices and innovations and provide our passengers with a world class experience each and every time they fly with us. IATA also provides us a platform to closely work and collaborate with other airline members and expand our network through code shares and agreements with partner airlines.”

“We are delighted to welcome SpiceJet as part of the 290 airlines in the IATA family. SpiceJet is the first Indian low cost carrier to be an IATA member, and our fifth member in India. We look forward to working with Ajay Singh and his team at SpiceJet in shaping the industry’s agenda in India and around the world, and in bringing value to SpiceJet through its IATA membership,” said Conrad Clifford, IATA’s Regional Vice President for Asia Pacific.

The IATA membership is also significant on account of SpiceJet’s plans for rapidly expanding its international footprint. IATA operates numerous global airline industry initiatives and programs in financial and distribution areas; and the membership also allows SpiceJet to explore and grow its collaborations with international member airlines of IATA through interlining and code shares, enabling SpiceJet to seamlessly expand the network options for its passengers in future.

The airline had recently achieved IATA’s Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) Certificate, the benchmark for global safety management in airlines, which is an essential requirement to gain IATA membership, and confirms SpiceJet’s compliance with internationally approved aviation safety standards across parameters in operational management and control systems.
